As Time Goes By.

As Time Goes By.
pg. 49          THE SUBURBAN PROMISED LAND CHANGES EVERY ONE?   YES.

Mimi and Etienne both worked at the B & P Bank. Also both fought all the time. In private. In front of friends who visited them enjoying the long ride at the edge of the ocean. Enjoying the long ride at the edge of the ocean. Admiring their three bedroom home, one and a half baths, two car garage. But the woman in the mirror told Mimi, I’m so pretty. Is this all I’m going to get out of life? Work, work, work? I want to be protected, treasured, appreciated. Etienne didn’t speak to the woman in the mirror. She made him feel inadequate. I’m doing the best I can, he would say. Too soon it would not be enough. Too soon. SHE WAS WALKING downhill when a small pickup stopped. Can I give you a ride? The man in heavy denim shirt and coveralls smiled. Thank you. I thought you drove a car. Mimi said while nervously trying to ease herself onto the seat. I do. I’m T. J. The smile broadened. Full of questions his eyes—one green, one blue? How strange she thought. And you are my neighbor? Yes, my name is Mimi.

As Time Goes By.

pg. 45  ¿And who are they?

THEY WERE THE new neighbors. The showy, late model convertible with the top down, all fins-and-chrome-red-white Fairlane cruised slowly up the hill. A man at the wheel, a woman cuddled next to him. They had just moved into one of the newly finished houses at the end of their block. The cul-de-sac filled up with an interesting mix. Most of the men were for generations blue collar workers, proud of their Unions. Some made an effort to be always in the limelight. Others kept a low profile. Like the couple at the end  of the block of Mexican descent. But it wasn’t until years later Mimi found out they spoke Spanish fluently. We grew up in the United States, they explained. At school then, they used to punish you if they heard you speaking Spanish.

As Time Goes By.

As Time Goes By.
pg.40 IN THE SUBURBAN PROMISED LAND
THE COUPLE WAS trying to hold on to their piece of the American Dream: a detached three-bedroom-one-and-a-half-baths house with a front yard and a back yard that allowed a view of the Pacific only blocks away. A picture window in the living room, with a view of hills covered with trees where deer grazed. They were now installed in their tract house in the new development, Paradise, a suburb eighteen miles from San Francisco where even utilities, transportation were a threat to their budget—the floor furnace in the tiny cottage had been so affordable. Now with the central heating it had tripled. Transportation! Could hardly afford to use the Olds. Gas was very expensive. A dollar for gas? Do we have dollar fifty?
