Foster’s chain of cafeterias were all over San Francisco. Foster’s at Seventh and Market never closed which was most welcomed by Greyhound passengers that arrived at the nearby terminal at all hours, day and night. Mimi getting off the streetcar would be greeted by music blaring from loud speakers of nearby record stores, Kay Starr singing Wheel of Fortune, Jo Stafford You belong to me, Nat King Cole Mona Lisa. The cafeteria’s wall to wall windows looked out onto the street. Customers found a festive atmosphere inside where orders were shouted in sing-song, 1 CHICKEN SOUP. 1 PEA SOUP. 1 BEEF STEW. Clever word play was practiced: HOLD THAT CHICKEN AND MAKE IT PEA! A shining glass counter welcomed them filled with appetizing dishes of colorful desserts, fresh cut fruits arranged to please the eye. Tall glasses filled with small squares of Jello shining like jewels, huge emeralds, rubies, topazes. Meats in platters garnished with fresh sprigs of parsley circled with vegetables of alternating colors.

greeted me with a warm hug and motioned for me to follow him outside, Associated Press quoted you, he said and handed me the article.

I was elated. I remembered the reporter. a gentle spoken woman who had taken my statement. I read the article eagerly: my name was mispelled, and no. I don't live in San Francisco.

Oh, well! I kidded my friends, when you become famous, you know ... ? it's out of your hands.

A second clipping arrived, from Brian,in Modesto. The same two mistakes, please. I never said:   When there is a war we talk about our girl friends ....

Come on ...

Then Tereza,of the Blue Monkey, greeted me with a cheerful: I have the article. Besides all the other missquotes it said: I had lived in San Francsisco for a year.

Oh man!

Went home and reviewed them all.What to do? I don't know. Uhmmmmmm. One single truth was in all of them, I had told her that I like to use the word poetess to desecribe myself. All three articles contained the word poetess.

MIMI AND ETIENNE liked the movies. He immersed himself in them analyzed them, delivery of lines, lights, plot, how actors, actresses moved. Mimi listened delighted. You have Ava Gardner’s shoulders he murmured. The Fox Theater on Market Street splendid, elegant with an organ that was renowned around the world was their favorite. They went there most Friday nights with Lorena and Teddy in their brand new Nash Rambler which they lovingly washed and waxed every Saturday morning.

It Had Been A Long Time

since she ‘seen a teenager eating like that:
Hunched over. he ate slowly, calmly
as if the whole world were at peace,
seen through his eyes. His movements were
precise, deliberate. Every bite he put
in his mouth he masticated carefully.

He took the teakettle and poured himself
a cup watching the liquid fill the space
as if there was nothing more important in
the universe at that moment. It took
his complete attention. He took some sips,
they met his approval. Sipped slowly.
Replenished the cup as needed. Savored it.

She hadn’t seen anyone so self absorbed
in a long, long time. Had forgotten that
tea is to be savored, a mud-pie to be
relished slowly, reverently calmly.

Tea and mud-pie, she’ll try to remember to
savor them, to masticate them with precise
deliberate movements. Next time will try
not to rush through the day: getting to work,
organizing files, pleasing boyfriend, checking
e-mail, getting groceries, paying bills.

Next time.... Next time she'll
savor her tea, slowly, reverently, and calmly
eat her mud-pie.

Next time…she’ll try to be self
absorbed.

San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, don’t know what to do regards crime by young persons, who r killing themselves and each other daily. Suggestion: spent money in creating jobs, classes, training in arts and crafts, vocational/trade schools so the many idle hands, tortured minds will get busy learning what can be of use to them and the community, making dreams come true instead of turning into nightmares. Stop spending millions in more guns, more police officers and “experts.” Because, Let’s face it, isn’t working.

My cup was overflowing. I was very pleased with life. Said a prayer of thanks. Started some research needed 2 do when Google intruded. What? That magnificent poem of mine that I thought was rejected—— & it hurt, but I just went on & posted it on FB where it looked really good, although nobody seemed to notice, but I knew it was there & was feeling great about it.—— But NO, it had been published!!!!!!! YES, & by what I consider one of the BEST LITERARY sites ever created!!  Plus Claudia Ricci, the Editor, had enhanced it with one of her excellent paintings. Better late than…….. Hd a great time lst fri mar 29 @ Center for Culture and Politics 518 Valencia St SF celebrating US Premiere for the
Cuba 5. We heard SF Poet Laureate, Alejandro Murguia, and I was honored by being invited 2 read also & singer Maria Loreto sung & played the guitar, plus several others expressed their thoughts on support of the Cuba 5.  Chelis Lopez & Alicia Jrapko were the coordinators. The evening was a success because of the hard work of all the volunteers.

Great fun was had my all.
